Some hauntings come with rattling chains. Enville Golf Club in England got a coat hanger.
In February 1979, members of the club reported a season of classic poltergeist mischief: furniture sliding across the floor as if someone had just stood up, lights switching on and off by themselves, and an older room in the clubhouse that staff simply stopped wanting to enter. The incident that made the case immortal: a coat hanger that allegedly flew across the room and struck a man.
Mediums were eventually called in. Nearly fifty years later, the case survives in Britain’s Paranormal Database under the wonderfully matter-of-fact heading “Coat Hanger Throwing,” and it’s back in circulation this Halloween as part of a haunted-golf series.
There’s something about poltergeist reports that fixate on one small, ridiculous object. A thrown coat hanger is harder to wave away than a shadow in a hallway — maybe because nobody inventing a ghost story would invent that.
